Question · mos-001
How many passengers may a sport pilot carry?
Answer
One passenger.
Sport pilot privileges remain limited to carrying no more than one passenger, even in aircraft with more seats.
14 CFR §61.315
Question · mos-002
On what date did the MOSAIC pilot training, certification and privilege changes take effect?
Answer
October 22, 2025.
The MOSAIC final rule was published July 24, 2025. Pilot rules took effect 90 days later; most aircraft certification changes take effect July 24, 2026.
FAA MOSAIC Fact Sheet
Question · mos-003
What maximum clean stall speed (VS1) applies to airplanes a sport pilot may operate under MOSAIC?
Answer
59 knots CAS.
§61.316 sets the performance limits for aircraft a sport pilot may fly, including a maximum stalling speed without lift-enhancing devices of 59 knots calibrated airspeed.
14 CFR §61.316
Question · mos-004
What does a sport pilot need to fly at night under MOSAIC?
Answer
Night training with a logbook endorsement, plus at least a third-class medical certificate or BasicMed.
A U.S. driver's license alone does not allow night flight. The pilot must complete the required night training and endorsement and hold a medical or BasicMed.
14 CFR §61.315; FAA Sport Pilot page
Question · mos-005
Can a sport pilot use a U.S. driver's license instead of a medical certificate for daytime flying?
Answer
Yes, if they meet the conditions of §61.303.
Conditions include following license restrictions, not having had a most recent medical denied, suspended or revoked, and not knowing of a condition that makes flight unsafe.
14 CFR §61.303
Question · air-001
What must a sport pilot have before operating in Class B, C or D airspace?
Answer
A logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor after the required training.
Sport pilots may not operate in Class B, C or D airspace, or at airports with an operational control tower, without the training and endorsement required by §61.325.
14 CFR §61.325
Question · air-002
Which airspace class requires an ATC clearance before entry?
Answer
Class B.
Class B requires an explicit ATC clearance ("cleared into the Class Bravo"). Class C and D require two-way radio communication to be established.
14 CFR §91.131; FAA AIM Ch. 3
Question · wx-001
What are standard sea-level temperature and pressure?
Answer
15 °C (59 °F) and 29.92 inHg (1013.2 hPa).
These International Standard Atmosphere values are the reference for altimeter calibration and performance charts.
FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Ch. 4
Question · wx-002
What is the standard temperature lapse rate in the lower atmosphere?
Answer
About 2 °C (3.5 °F) per 1,000 feet.
In the standard atmosphere, temperature decreases roughly 2 °C for every 1,000 feet of altitude gained.
FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Ch. 4
Question · ins-001
Which three flight instruments are operated by the pitot-static system?
Answer
Airspeed indicator, altimeter and vertical speed indicator.
The altimeter and VSI use static pressure; the airspeed indicator compares pitot (ram) pressure with static pressure.
FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Ch. 8
Question · aer-001
What are the four forces acting on an airplane in flight?
Answer
Lift, weight, thrust and drag.
Lift opposes weight and thrust opposes drag. In steady, unaccelerated flight they are in balance.
FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Ch. 5
Question · aer-002
What causes a wing to stall?
Answer
Exceeding the critical angle of attack.
A wing can stall at any airspeed, attitude or power setting if the critical angle of attack is exceeded.
FAA Airplane Flying Handbook, Ch. 5
Question · nav-001
What is magnetic variation?
Answer
The angle between true north and magnetic north at a given location.
Variation is shown on sectional charts as isogonic lines and is used to convert true course to magnetic course.
FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Ch. 16
Question · nav-002
In VFR cruise more than 3,000 ft AGL on a magnetic course of 0°–179°, what altitude should you fly?
Answer
An odd thousand feet MSL plus 500 feet (e.g., 5,500).
For magnetic courses of 180°–359°, fly an even thousand plus 500 feet (e.g., 6,500).
14 CFR §91.159
Question · emg-001
Which transponder code signals a general emergency?
Answer
7700.
Squawk 7600 indicates lost communications and 7500 indicates unlawful interference (hijacking).
FAA Aeronautical Information Manual, 6-2-2
Question · chk-001
What is the minimum age to receive a sport pilot certificate for airplanes?
Answer
17 years old.
The minimum age is 16 for gliders and balloons, and 17 for other aircraft such as airplanes.
14 CFR §61.305
