The certificate
What is a Sport Pilot certificate?
Created by the FAA in 2004, the Sport Pilot certificate lets you fly for fun in aircraft that meet specific performance limits — often with a valid U.S. driver's license instead of an FAA medical certificate. Training requires fewer minimum hours than a Private Pilot certificate.
- • Carry up to one passenger
- • Fly recreationally, not for hire
- • Add privileges like towered airspace or night flight with training and endorsements
New rules
Meet MOSAIC
The FAA's Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification rule greatly expanded the aircraft sport pilots may fly. Pilot changes took effect October 22, 2025; aircraft certification changes follow on July 24, 2026.
